Module 5
Using, re-using and re-purposing OER

The first statement of this module is:

OER does not equate to Quality Materials

But OER...
  • give you exposure to different educational resources;
  • give you a good idea how to benchmark your own work;
  • teach you how to release your work under an open license and how you can serve to improve quality;
  • The potential of OER is best achieved through a collaborative partnership of people working in communities of practice;
  • have the potential of reducing the cost of accessing educational materials;
  • can provide opportunities for learners to adapt materials and thus become more active participants in educational
    processes.

OER is just one component of quality courses

Good courses consist of the following:

To create new part of materials by using or re-purposing OER
To create new courses by using, re-using and reporposing OER
Use students to
generate OER

Activity 5

Explore within your own context the possible use of OER.  What are the limitations in your context for using OER?  Discuss the use of OER with your colleagues and make a list of possibilities.  Prioritise them and indicate which ones you can start with immediately.

Challenge:  Present OER to your colleagues and argue for the exploration of the use of OER in your institution.
